Friday 24th June

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, though I’m sure it won’t take as long to go through as reading would. Here are some splendid shots of last week’s Heart Garden, activities that day included harvesting, a healthy lunch with fruits and vegetables from the garden and an art session on ceramic tiles.

We are very happy to announce that Art in the Park and one of our long time volunteers Chris Daniels has won the Topps Tiles Award for Achievement in Mosaics 2010-2011 (yes…that is a mouthful but we got there in the end).

Chris has come a long way, having not had the confidence in the past in his own abilities, art (namely mosaics) has helped him become more confident and also gain a valuable, creative and fun skill. What’s more is the fact that this piece of news has coincided with his 60th birthday! (Just gone the past Sunday) We want to congratulate him and wish him every happiness!

Represented by Art in the Park is artist Jane Higginbottom (who is also Chris’ teacher in mosaics) headed the Kaleidoscope Mosaics project which has won this prize. We ran a series of mosaic workshops as part of Creation’s Kaleidoscope project on the Aylesbury Estate last year.

The judge for this prize was David Tuhill who has taught at various art colleges including The Royal College of Art. He has experience at all levels of art and design education and has been part of various design programmes and businesses.

Here are the comments left by the judge:

Jane Higginbottom, ART IN THE PARK

“What a wonderful idea Kaleidoscope mosaic Project was, the pieces look beautiful on the weathered wall. They must have attracted a lot of admireres. I presume this was your initiative Jane and well done for that, I hope it’s something you can repeat on another occasion.”

Chris Daniels, HEART GARDEN PLANTER

“This plant holder looks so good in situ. Each bloom looks wonderful and compliments the one on either side of it. This goes on all round the holder and is further enhanced by the multi-coloured background. A splendid idea Chris and executed so very well; you win the award, congratulations!”
